LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate)

BBack

Back to Glossary

Description

The average interest rate at which leading banks borrow funds on a short-term basis from other banks in the London market, used as a benchmark.

LIBOR was the benchmark for short-term interest rates among banks but is being phased out due to manipulation scandals in 2012 that damaged market trust. It’s being replaced by various rates from around the world.
